WebWeavers

Public Group active 1 year, 4 months ago

Just about every branch of the Vincentian Family has a website or is in the process of getting one. This group can serve as a water cooler for conversations about what is involved in setting up, maintaining and sharing “best practices” about websites.

famvin.com is preparing for serving as a place for others to host websites — a bit like wordpress.com. Anyone out there interested? What services would interest you?

A quote I found in the mail from Buydomains.com: ”The right domain name is the difference between success and failure. On the Internet your domain name is your ’real estate’. Get it right the first time…”

    So the bottom line is…
    1. Make sure your contact information with your domain registrar is up to date so that notices of expiration will get to you or the “new” person if you no longer have responsibility.
    2. Consider the possibility of registering your “brand” name for the three most common names – .org, .net and .com
    Consider it insurance…[Read more]

Domain names are valuable ‘family jewels’. When you start you website, you are choosing (registering) the domain name. Sometimes you register another domain name and another. Sometimes you can abandon you first domain. Did you ever think what happens to an abandoned domain? Abandoned domain is like Ronin ( A Samurai without sovereign). It’s…[Read more]

OK – so the FAMVIN family of websites is looking at some common branding and possibly a new logo to use across all sites… make it a somewhat more seamless experience. If we run a poll on famvin.org/en/ will you guys respond? We will need feedback.

Hi, Beth! Yes, I’ll respond. However, it seems I don’t always get the alerts of new posts to our sites. Anyway I can check to make sure I get them? I’m still learning the ropes on FAMVIN. Thanks! c

I’m looking for resources to help me design some usability studies. I know, from a previous life in academic libraries, that I can get most of my data from 7 users… but how to design the questions to be addressed?

Tweet Your MEP (Member of European Parliament) is the communication platform which eneables people to contact their MEPs on Tweeter, an individual or group at once. Forget the European Parliament, but what about ”Tweet Your Vincentian?”

I too am suspicious about the viability of an organization with a website that has not been updated in months or years. One can’t put up a page/site and then ignore it. In many cases this is the public relations face of an organization.

    1. Commitment 2. Responsibility 3. Sharing Updating business/organization/community webpage cannot be and “extra duty”, “off-hours activity”. To do the updating, to keep up webpage alive requires commitment and full-time involvement. Over at famvin.org, we have varying schedules for updating: the “News” sites are updated almost every day; the Encyclopedias are sporadic as folks find the time and energy to add/revise content; Vinformation is updated frequently. Others sites seem to be updated less frequently. Is this a deliberate choice or is it driven by the ease/difficulty [...]

The General Assembly is over, so I’ve upgraded all of the cmglobal sites to WordPress 3. Seems to have gone well. That is one of the issues that we face when setting up sites using any Content Management software (Drupal, Wordpress, EE, Joomla)… keeping the background applications up to date. Often for security reasons more [...]

WP 3.0.1 is knocking at the dooryet. For those who use WP, Twenty-Ten theme looks quite cute for those looking for something more than basic

Yes — I’ve updated many, but not all of the famvin sites to 3.01. I’ll get to the others, probably today. Twenty-Ten is a very flexible theme that is easily customized through the admin interface.
