This is a ready-made place for folks who attended either Indianapolis or Belleville to share their experiences of trying to run with some of the ideas presented in these works.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

I’ve been home from the recent VINFAM meetings in Indianapolis for a couple of weeks and have had some time to consider what I have learned from this year’s meeting. When I first became involved in our Voice of the Poor advocacy work here in Ontario for the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, I always had this fear that by having my focus on…[Read more]

The Ontario Regional Council of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has now formed a Systemic change committee that will accept applications from individuals for micro financing and also from member conferences for a systemic change project. We anticipate that with the proper promotion of this committee and funding source, we can begin to help…[Read more]

There has not been much activity in our group.
Is that because we are too busy changing systers?

  • The Voice of The Poor committee of the Ontario Society of Saint Vincent de Paul held a very successful workshop on systemic change on May 14th in St. Catharines,On. There will be a full report in the near future on this workshop on the Famvin website. The other event on this same weekend was a Friday nigh poverty forum. Our local members were…[Read more]

    • As one who attended the Friday evening session I can attest how moving it was to hear “clients” step out of the role they are so often locked into.
I was among the ones who was moved to tears by their simplicity in sharing their struggles.
It was a powerful example of being evangelized by those we are privileged to serve.
      On a practical level…[Read more]

As a prelude to our May 14th presentation on systemic change, we’ll have a poverty forum the previous evening. We’ll invite several guests who are living in poverty along with a small number (15-20) of local Vincentians. Our guests will be invited to tell their story and how poverty has affected them. We’ll then have an open discussion on…[Read more]

Here in Ontario, Canada, we’ll taking the first step to introduce systemic change by having a full day presentation on this topic to be given by John Freund. This will be mainly for members of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul but we also plan to invite participants from other branches of the VinFam as well as a couple of Catholic diocesan…[Read more]

  • Hi folks. I’ll be spending a lot of time this winter on systemic change issues.
I plan on including it in our National and Ontario strategic plans. I chair both of these committees. I’m also going to review and revise an old program we had in Ontario called Adopt a Family. This program never really went anywhere but I can now see it as a true…[Read more]

    • Adopt a Family sounds like a great idea. Maybe I will look into something like this at my SVDP conference.

    • I love this concept! One thing to consider would be including some formal method of ”investment” from the family. It might be maintaining a certain GPA, or some type of ”sweat equity” depending on what the grant is covering. It’s an accountability measure, but also it helps maintain the dignity of the recipient.

  • I’d like to ask for comments from others as far as collabortaion on systemic changes projects.
My opinion is that while it’s good to collaborate with other members of the Vincentian family, it is also good to look at ways we can also join other like minded faith traditions in a project that addresses systemic change. Here in Canada, we just…[Read more]

    • Since no one else has responded to this let me jump in…

I think we have some wonderful examples in the work of our respective NGO representatives at the UN, the collaboration of the Vincent dePaul Society with Catholic Charities USA and their role in working with Congressional leaders in the US on some significant pilot legislations. Sr. Mary…[Read more]

    • I think we can definitely work outside of the Vincentian Family; the key is not to loose the charism in doing so. Working with other faiths and secular groups can give us the opportunity to share the charism and preach the Gospel in action. In this area we have a “council of churches” and the various faith groups work together on projects (and…[Read more]

I just posted a story on the main famvin site about how the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton, Ohio are fostering systemic change through philanthropy that targets ”silo breakers.”.
