Research on Ozanam and SVdP Founders
Public Group active 1 year, 3 months agoThis is a group designed for people interested in sharing insights and research on Frederic Ozanam and the Founders of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. It is an opportunity to share newly discovered sources of information or new understandings of the founders and the early years of the organization. Much wonderful work has been done by scholars in France and much work needs to be done to make this knowledge available to English speakers as we approach Frederic’s 200th birthday in 2013.

Research on Ozanam and SVdP Founders: 1 year, 8 months ago · updated 1 year, 2 months agoI’m still new to VirtualVins, so I’m posting a portion of the message I just posted on the “general” site. I was able to produce a 12-program television series for the Baton Rouge Society of St. Vincent de Paul because of all the wonderful research the Vincenitans are doing! Here’s the post:
”Beacons of Light” programs – the link is to my…[Read more]

Research on Ozanam and SVdP Founders: 1 year, 3 months ago · updated 1 year, 3 months agoUsing google books. I have found many of Ozanam’s works and works about him in Google books
http://www.google.com/search?q=frederic+ozanam&tbm=bks&tbo=1
Many of these are out of print or hard to get and you can save them as pdfs for future reference. You can also view them as text files and use google translate to get a very rough idea…[Read more]

Research on Ozanam and SVdP Founders: 1 year, 4 months ago · updated 1 year, 3 months agoI was on vacation in Paris last week and while I was there I was able to go to our International Office. They gratiously let me use their library and I was able to study the work that Fr. Jarry did on Emmanuel Bailly. It was very instructive and I will add the information to my article on the SVdP founders on FamVin. I may soon do a stand alone…[Read more]

Research on Ozanam and SVdP Founders: 1 year, 6 months ago · updated 1 year, 6 months agoAs a member of the SSVP, I’d like to see us put more importance on our Vincentian charism as seen through Ozanam’s eyes. Father Maloney did an excellent comparison at last week’s meetings in Belleville that compared Vincent to our modern day work on sewveral topics.. If we could do something like that for Ozanam it would help connect our…[Read more]

Research on Ozanam and SVdP Founders: 1 year, 7 months ago · updated 1 year, 7 months agoI now have access to an English translation of a Spanish life of Ozanam. It runs more than 100 hundred pages.
It is an excellent resource and I will be posting it to the Vincentian Encyclopedia over the course of the next week or so.
If you would like an advance copy in Word format please let me know and I will send it to you.-
Hi
Yes I would very much like to see copy – thanks -
I was reading a bit of the first installment online and noticed that it claims Frederic’s brother was ordained at the age of 18. I am sure that this is incorrect. I am wondering if it was mistranslated and was maybe when Frederic was 18. Fr Ron will know.
-
Oh, Oh – another error ”In 1831 he was presented with an opportunity when Victor Cousin, Minister of Public Education, offered him a position in the Collѐge de Orleans.” This was in 1838 or 39. I also see a couple of other problems. I am wondering if the translation needs reviewing by someone familiar with Ozanam’s life.

Research on Ozanam and SVdP Founders: 1 year, 8 months agoFor those of you attending the upcoming SVdp National Annual Meeting, here’s a little traveling music from L’Angelus, the young Cajun band from Lafayette, LA, whose song “This Day God Gives Me” we used for our opening and closing theme (“Beacons of Light”).

The first of the two videos I have seen were indeed magnificent both in production values and in their insights into the work and spirituality of the SVDP.
Perhaps you could share with this group links so that they might appreciate what you have done.
I suspect many of this group will be in NOLA for the meeting. Unfortunately I can…[Read more] -

Research on Ozanam and SVdP Founders: 1 year, 8 months ago · updated 1 year, 8 months agoI am working on some of the prehistory of the Society for my New Orleans talk. In Gerard Cholvy’s book “Frederic Ozanam, L’engagement d’un intellectuel catholique au XIX siecle” there is this quote on page 240 –

Although it may seem odd posting replies to myself I did find more information in Marcel Vincent’s book, Frederic Ozanam the young romantic. I would like to post these on Famvin’s VinFormation http://vinformation.famvin.org — they would be great to add to the “Focus on the SVDP” category.
